Grand Gala Concert Wombourne featuring High Arcal School Advanced Jazz Band

On the evening of Saturday 25th October 2014, we held our Grand Gala Concert at Wombourne Civic Centre. Our special guests were High Arcal School Advanced Jazz Band led by James Roberts. The band was started about 10 years ago. In this time they have enjoyed a lot of success in regional and national competitions & events.
They have won numerous Gold & Platinum awards at the National Concert Band Festival and have been invited to perform in Music for Youth’s National Festival at Adrian Boult Hall at Birmingham Conservatoire.
The band also perform in various concerts in school and may be booked to play at events in the wider community. E.g. they have performed at Brierley Hill Civic Hall.

Nostalgic Musical Evening with Bridgtown Concert Band at Goodyear Pavilion

We held a ‘Nostalgic Musical Evening’ at The Goodyear Pavilion in Wolverhampton on Friday 11th July 2014 commencing at 7.30 p.m. This event started the choir’s contribution in both celebrating and in memory of the 1st and 2nd World Wars – given in song, using music from both eras – to bring back both good and sad memories of those times.

Poppy field NormandyOur Musical Director, Mr Graham Hancox compiled appropriate pieces for the evening’s entertainment. The programme included ‘Lest we Forget’, ‘What a Wonderful World’, ‘Over the Rainbow’, ‘A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square’, ‘The way you look tonight’, ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, a Perry Como medley, ‘The Rose’, ‘Let there be peace on Earth’, a medley of First World War songs, an Al Jolson medley and The Dambusters March.

VIP guests included the current Mayor and Mayoress of Wolverhampton and our Honorary Patron Lady Bilston; Pat Turner, who sadly lost her husband, Lord Bilston (who was joint Honorary Patron) earlier this year.

Bridgtown Concert BandWe had the pleasure of featuring The Bridgtown Concert Show Band, who entertained us with their own material, as well as accompanying the choir for a few pieces. We encouraged those attending to ‘dress up’ in the 40’s style and bring Union Jack flags to wave in a good old sing-song.

Rest in Peace Lord Bilston (1942-2014)

Lord Bilston in The Queen’s Robing Room at his induction to the House of Lords in 2005

We received the sad news that Lord Bilston, Dennis Turner, passed away on the evening of Tuesday 25th February 2014. The 71-year-old served as Labour MP for Wolverhampton South East from 1987 to 2005 before being made a peer.

Lord and Lady Bilston have been Patrons of our choir since 2011. Fittingly Dennis was born around the time our choir was founded. (1943) He attended many of our concerts and was often seen singing along ‘unofficially’ with the choir. Lord and Lady Bilston also attended other events and functions and Dennis has also presented long service certificates to a number of choir members. We will miss him, but we hope that Lady Bilston will grace us with the honour of remaining our Patron. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Pat, his brother Bert and the rest of the family from the choir and our Lady Supporters.

Dennis Turner funeral order of service 6

At our St. David’s day concert on 1st March we paid tribute to Lord Bilston and stood for a minute’s silence in honour and thanks for his Patronage to the choir.

To pay our respects, the choir sang during Dennis’s funeral service at St. Leonard’s Church in Bilston on Wednesday 12th March. We sang Gwahoddiad and helped to lead the hymns.

Paul Smith presenting the Bilston Carol to Dennis Turner in 2008

Lyrics of “The Bilston Carol.”

Awake, ye slumbering sons of men,
In lowly cot and stately hall,
Here neath your window now I wish,
A Happy Christmas to you all.

The mistletoe hangs overhead,
The holly shines upon the wall,
Come hear the burden of my song,
A Happy Christmas to you all.

Awake, the snow is falling fast,
The earth is whitened with its fall,
Come, fill your bowls and let us drink,
A Happy Christmas to you all.
