[Report written by Robert Grollitsch, a recent guest member]
What are your expectations when you, a 22 year old music lover from Austria, are asked whether or not you want to join a Male Voice Choir? Well, whatever I expected it was better than that! From the moment I set foot in the rehearsal room I was overwhelmed. Not only by the warm welcome that I received from every single member of the choir, but also by their love for the music, the fun they have before, during and after rehearsals and their open minded attitude.
Yes, most members are older than I am and most of them have been singing in the Wolverhampton Orpheus MVC for a long time, but still, not once was I made to feel inferior or anything like that. The weekly rehearsal became a fixed part of my week and when my housemates asked if I was going to choir tonight, I always got excited because it was Wednesday again!
Photo quiz: Can you spot Robert in the line up?
It all reached its highlight at the Concert in Priorslee, Telford. It was my first, but sadly also my last with them, and I would not want to miss these moments. It makes me sad that I will not be able to sing with them for the Choir’s 70th Anniversary on the 21st of July in the Grand Theatre Wolverhampton. Knowing the repertoire and the amount of work these guys put into their hobby I can say that this is definitely going to be an amazing night.
Nevertheless, I have to go home to Austria, but do you think they would just let me slip out without them noticing? No! They presented me with their jumper, the tie and two buttons, one from the Wolverhampton Orpheus MVC and one from the Association of Male Voice Choirs – all of which I will proudly wear! As the last piece of music I did with this amazing folks, I asked for one special song (“Let there be Peace on Earth”) and guess what? Not only did we sing it, but I also got a copy of it. Thank you so much for a fabulous time spent with you!
You are more than welcome to contact me on Facebook if you want any further information on my time with the Wolverhampton Orpheus Male Voice Choir!
